Couples Therapy: A Different Approach

Most people wonder why the same argument keeps happening. Why what you need most seems to be exactly what your partner struggles to give and vice versa. Why the qualities that made you fall in love seem to have gone quiet.

Maybe you’re finding it harder and harder to trust, even though nothing new has happened. Old patterns you thought you’d worked through are resurfacing, and you’re starting to question whether you chose the right partner at all.

Maybe you’re having the same argument, almost word for word, without ever landing on a solution that actually holds.

Maybe the more you try to talk it through, the further apart you feel; like you and your partner are speaking two different languages about the same problem.

Maybe you’ve already tried couples counseling, or individual therapy, to work through this without the results holding.

Maybe you’re married to a survivor of childhood trauma, and you love your partner but don’t know how to help when old pain takes over the moment.

If any of this sounds familiar: this isn’t a sign something is wrong with your relationship, and it isn’t a sign you picked the wrong person.

It’s a sign of what we call Body History™ — the pockets of unresolved feelings and old beliefs each of us carries in the body, formed long before this relationship began. When things are calm, Body History stays quiet. When stress or conflict shows up, it wakes up — and starts running the show with old, self-protective beliefs that have nothing to do with what’s actually happening between you and your partner right now. In that moment, it can start to feel like your partner no longer has your best interest at heart — when the truth is usually the opposite.

The good news: feeling stuck here is an invitation, not a dead end. It’s exactly the doorway into deeper trust and more resilient connection.

Why we don’t separate partners for individual work first

A common assumption is that you should do individual therapy before couples work. We disagree — and research backs us up: relationships are more likely to end in separation when a therapist splits partners into individual tracks. The more effective path is staying in the room together, learning to tolerate discomfort as a team, and building new patterns side by side.

What makes this approach different

Doing this work well takes a therapist who:

  • Is comfortable sitting inside real conflict, and can work with it directly instead of steering around it.
  • Understands each partner’s individual Body History — and how the two interact in real time to create the specific pattern that keeps showing up between you.
  • Holds a strong ethical commitment to keeping you together through the process wherever possible, because that’s where the most durable change happens. (There are a few exceptions to this, which we can talk through directly if they apply to you.)

Most couples therapy has each partner facing the therapist, taking turns explaining their side. That format keeps the therapist at the center of the conversation — and limits how much you and your partner actually practice reconnecting with each other while you’re in the room.

Instead, we teach a process called Empathetic Conversation™ — a structured way of talking directly to each other that surfaces the patterns causing disconnection, while building real-time emotional safety. I stay present as a guide, stepping in only when it creates an opening for deeper connection, not to referee.

Through this work, you’ll learn to recognize when Body History is running the moment instead of what’s true between you now — and build the vulnerability, curiosity, and trust that lets you meet each other as you actually are today.

This isn’t just crisis management — it’s a lasting skill

The goal isn’t just resolving today’s conflict. You’ll leave with tools that keep working long after therapy ends, because they’re skills you both own, not something you depend on a therapist to maintain. Your relationship can be a place of real safety, curiosity, and even fun again — not something you’re managing, but something you’re actively building together.

Want to move faster? The Couples Therapy Intensive uses the same Body History™ and Empathetic Conversation™ framework in one focused 4-hour session, instead of months of weekly appointments. Or start with the Reconnect Workshop for Couples. Questions about cost? Visit Fees & Insurance.
